A continuation of the canon of music my mother gifted me growing up. Many of these songs accompanied the hiss and crackle of plantains frying in the pan before they joined plates of ackee, salt fish and bread dumplings on our dining room table for Sunday breakfast.

I’ve had problems with my back for almost a decade; this immersive sound experience explores songs that have layers I can feel in my body, especially while lying down. I recommend diving in with good headphones and a clear schedule.

In her images, Deana Lawson shows her subjects as “creative, god-like beings”. This set of songs invoke a feeling of super-heroism that rap music, as a manifestation of Black culture in the US, instills in me. Mood: puttin’ your hands in somebody's face.
